Sample Letter for the TSA

Please ask your allergist to provide a letter for airport security, to make your travels safer for your food allergic child(ren).

Note: This is just a suggested letter.  Please revise this to meet your child's health needs.  Airport Security may or may not comply to the doctor's advice.

To Whom It May Concern:

(Name) is a (age/sex) who suffers from a life-threatening allergy to (allergic food).  This is a severe allergic reaction that makes it medically necessary for him/her to carry an antihistamine and self-injectable epiniephrine (EpiPen or Twinject) at all times.  Epinephrine is prescribed by a licensed medical professional.  (Name) should have this lifesaving medication with him at all times, especially during times of travel away from home.  In the event of exposure to even a minute amount of allergen, a severe allergic reaction may occur.  Every minute is critical in using this medication to treat the allergic reaction and to prevent a life-threatening reaction.  Use of self-injectable epinephrine can be lifesaving.  Please allow (Name) to have his /her self-injectable epinephrine and Benadryl with him/her on board the plane.  Benadryl liquid should be carried on board the airplane along with his non-allergic food and his own liquid beverages.  Due to cross contamination with milk products, they must carry their own liquids.
