Hi, my daughters Ige for peanuts went from 13 to > 100 in 2 years. Does this number go up just due to exposure? I was shocked at the increase since we do not give her anything processed with peanuts. Thanks.

my kids ride an "allergy free" bus (mini bus) that comes to our door. there is an aide on the bus who is trained on how to administer the epipen. the bus driver is also trained. they share the bus with other kids who have severe food allergies. you'll need a note from your doctor requesting this and a 504 plan meeting with your district. there is little supervision on the big bus and even though they have a no food rule, the kids break it all the time.

my son is staring kindergarten and we filled out paper work for a 504. he is in a class with an aid but it is for another child. he isnt approved at this point and from what i can tell he will be sitting at the peanut free table by himself but that can change as of the 1st day. i was told that he was approved for an aid but the teacher called friday and told me that the aid isnt assigned to him. so i am furious! fustrated! mad! upset!! so on tuesday i plan on staying in the building until he is out of lunch/recess. I am not leaving the building until they give him someone to watch him during the most important part of the day - lunch/recess. I assure that the teacher is going to take great care of him but it seems that they are placing all the responsibility on the teacher instead of a health aid......am i over reacting????? should it be enough that there is another set of hands in the class? he will be at the peanut free table - not sure if there is anyone there to watch him. what do i do????

Just in case you didn't know...this is directly from their website, www.moocluck.com Question 5 What about cross contamination? At present time we work from a facility that uses eggs, dairy, nuts, wheat, soy and corn. We make every effort to thoroughly clean our equipment BUT if you have a severe allergy we don¿t want you to take a chance with your health. We hope to be in a egg and dairy free environment in a years time.

Reading labels gets very confusing. I pretty much stick to companies that label the main allergies in bold at the bottom of the ingredients. So far, these companies seem to be the ones that if it may contain anything else it is written there too.I feel safer doing that.most companies seem to be labeling this way as in past years you hardly saw it labeled this way. I have steered away from companies that dont highlight the main allergies. ***also on a seperate note, does anyone live in the massapequa area & have kids w/food allergies?was looking to get together to talk about everyday stuff.I keep trying to go to the meetings in holbrook- and just cant seem to make it due to babysitting issues.please email me***I'm hoping I can make a few meetings soon-I really would love to meet others in my same situation.

Also, Panera Bread seems to be pretty food allergy aware. when you go there-you can ask to see the food allergy book & you can look up what you can eat.my daughter is allergic to all nuts & my son allergic to milk & so far we have had no problem, knock wood.

Don't beat yourself up about it. It's such a learning curve. I don't trust many products that I used in the past without incident. Maybe I am being overly cautious, but unless I see a clear indication that a product is peanut free, in my mind it may well not be. With ice cream, though, that "peanut free" indication is next to impossible to find. So we use Breyer's and stick to 3 flavors that I've bought dozens of times without incident. I still watch my son for a reaction the first time he eats any from a new quart, though.

I think it depends upon your comfort level. We allow our child to ride the school bus without an aide - he is going into 2nd grade. In our district (as in most, I guess) the kids are not permitted to eat on the bus and this is strictly enforced. I always make the bus driver aware of my son's nut allergy. For us, we feel the risk is very low. Of course, I will feel better when he is old enough to carry his own meds.

I feel so naive and lucky. My son is peanut allergic and we have been using edy's ice cream for years. We usually just get vanilla but lately have branched out to cookies & cream. Their labels do not have allergy warnings on them. Today we were going to try cookie dough and I assumed it would not be safe as nestle's chocolate chips are not safe and there was no warning label. When I researched online, I found that all nutritional labels on the website contain a "may contain peanuts" statement but none of their products do. I feel so naive because I should have known better and so lucky that he has not experienced a reaction.

Hi, I wanted to ask any of the parents out there if they put their 5 yr old Kindergartener on the big bus (in the front seat behind the driver) w/o an aide? We were told that the bus driver is not responsible, nor can he/her administer an epi-pen in case of emergency but that our daughters (one w/ a peanut allergy..one w/ no allergy) can sit together in the front since we know our older daughter has not eaten peanuts. We are just too nervous for our 5 year old to be w/o anyone on the bus trip (about 20 min) to administer the pen in case her allergy is airborne. I was hoping for some feedback? Do any of you let your allergic kids on the big bus w/o an aide or should I be insisting on a mini bus w/ an aide? Thank you!

Thanks so much for that info about the cards you had made up - can you give a link to the company's website? We are planning a family trip to Italy next year and although we will be staying at a villa and preparing many of our own foods, I would feel much more comfortable having these cards with us. I have learned that in Italy, it is very common to use lupine bean flour mixed with wheat flour in many baked goods, including pizza dough. Those with peanut allergies may have a problem with lupine as it is a legume, like peanut.

Hello from FAAN! In recent years, many of you have taken part in various online surveys addressing issues important to the food allergy community. For our newest online survey, we've partnered with Dr. Matt Greenhawt at the University of Michigan to better understand the relationship between food allergies and medications. The survey is anonymous, has already been IRB approved, has 30 questions, and should only take a few minutes to complete. We plan to share the results of this survey with the FDA, the federal body that regulates pharmaceutical products. We also plan to write an article on the survey results for a professional publication. We invite you to take the survey by clicking on the following link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/QYT2TDC Thank you in advance. We appreciate your support.

My son is severely allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, and shellfish. He also has other less severe food allergies. Prior to our trip to Europe, I ordered allergy translation cards from Select Wisely in many languages. These cards were magical and worked better than I could have ever expected. On our Delta flights to and from Budapest, the airline attendants voluntarily chose to avoid serving peanuts snacks. During our time in Budapest, we were able to eat in every restaurant we walked into except for two. Everyone there spoke some English but the translation cards made sure they understood the severity of my son's allergies in their native tongue. It was an amazing experience for all of us. We haven't tried them out locally yet but their reception abroad was incredible. I do believe that our experience would have been adversely affected had it not been for our Select Wisely cards.

Thank you to the person who responed to my 504 handwashing question. I have written a letter and hoping to resolve this but if I can not than I know what to do. Also, I saw the posts about medic alert sports bands. My child is 5 yrs old and I ordered the sports band. We received it today and it can be made to fit his wrist but there are 3 inches of extra material. He thought it was itchy and uncomfortable. I am going to send the emblem to medic alert and they will put a chain on it.

i have a yr old who wears the sports band from medic alert. we have two of them. we had to cut them because his wrist is so small. when i cut it then i light a match to the end and blow out real fast. so then the end will not fray. it sounds weird to explain but works great. hope that helps. we have the kid alert plan with them. they have all the contact numbers and specific allergy info on file. i find it very reasonable for the annual plan. they are available 24 hrs a day. there was another (can't remember name, but large company) that i called io inquire and I got a VOICE MAIL that they were not able to take message due to company meeting!!! what the heck??

I read the posts on hand washing and how legally the school can not enforce it but what if it is already in the 504. I have a 504 which states all children will wash hands after lunch. Principal advised me that children will not wash hands until AFTER recess. I have a problem with this because my child will have direct contact with all of the children at recess (who just ate peanut butter & milk) washing the hands AFTER recess seems to defeat the purpose. Since handwashing is already in the 504, can I make them enforce it?

The Fridays that are participating are: Levittown, Manhasset, Westbury, Rockville Centre, Massapequa, Bayshore, Central Islip, Huntington, Farmingville, Hauppauge, and Riverhead. The hours are 5pm until close. This is an awesome promotion. For every $20 spent, $5 is donated to FAAN. How great is that. Of course it doesn't include drinks, tax and tip. The person going to the Fridays must bring a flyer for FAAN to get the credit. Another thing that will benefit FAAN is from group of guys in a band. They have an organization call ROCK OUT CURES (www.rockoutcures.org) and a portion of the September 18th (at the Plattduetsche Park Restaurant on Hempstead Turnpike in Franklin Square), concert will be presented to FAAN at the walk. A third event is the Kenneth Cole event at the Roosevelt Field Mall store on October 2nd from 6pm to 9p. I understand there will be a DJ and Babycake Company will be there. Flyer to follow. Legally, the school district cannot "enforce" hand washing. Your allergist will be your best advocate in this case. I gave my district permission for their doctor to speak with my child's allergist. Did you ask to tape record your meeting? I hope this gets resolved before school starts.

I have been losing sleep for two nights now, after my 504 meeting with the district's 504 committee. I signed off on the 504 that includes multiple preventative steps, however, my two largest requests and concerns cannot be added yet until I get a note from my Dr. that explains my daughters severity and EVEN then, may not be added to the 504! I am requesting that someone other than ONLY the nurse to be able to administer the epipen, and that the pen follow her around throughout the day instead of only being kept in the nurses office. During the meeting I was told that they CANNOT enforce children to wash their hands throughout the day. Luckily, there is another Mom from this group that also attends my elementary school and her 504 had this request...she was kind enough to give me a copy, and I presented that to the 504 committee. It was interesting that the person that told me the children cannot be mandated to wash their hands, was the one that signed this document for a fellow student that has this specifically mentioned!! 504 plans are not new to our Long Island districts...why would they not have told me what they were not willing to do and what I could have come to the table with to try to change policy? At this point, I am frightened to send my daughter to school and OUTRAGED that people that care for our children are willing to opt out of NOT using the EPIPEN! If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. Thank you!

Hello again, My husband and I are beginning the search for a babysitter for our six year old daughter who has FPIES to 13 known foods. This would be our very first babysitter for her, outside of family, and we want to be sure we are hiring someone whom we can trust and is knowledgeable of our daughter's serious medical condition. Hello, I have a six year old daughter with FPIES. Her wonderful pediatrician, of whom our daughter has been a patient for four years, recently transferred and is no longer within reasonable reach. Although another pediatrician has taken over, we have been experiencing a very difficult time in trying to get in touch with her, and not her residents, and trying to establish an ongoing relationship. We just returned from a wonderful trip to disney and the disney cruise. The chefs were wonderful and helpful in dealing with my son's peanut allergy. The counter service restaurant at our hotel was the only place he felt uncomfortable because we needed to wait for a manager to order the food. Unfortunately my 14 year old had a minor reaction after eating a cake containing walnuts. He has no known food allergies and will now get tested. He broke out in hives as a young child after playing with walnuts and has steered clear of eating nuts due to brother's allergy. He complained of a sore throat right after eating the cake and we gave him benadryl right away. Fortunately that was the extent of the reaction.

Hello, I hope this early August finds you and your children happy and healthy. The summer is going by so fast. We have started back to school shopping, but I have to admit I haven't tackled the Epipen forms yet. If you have members who are anxious about sending their children to school because of food allergies, I hope they will consider "Starting School with a Food Allergy", available on www.safeFoodForMe.com. Reading it with your child and with your child's classmates will help encourage the care and support your child needs. This children's picture book also emphasizes how much fun your child can have at school! Also at www.safeFoodForMe, I have recommended three websites with great back-to-school checklists. Take care, Christina Black

No, we do not. If Peanut oil is in a product we will not give it to our son. Why take a chance.

I have a question based on the following info... My friend recently discovered she is allergic to soy. In reading ingredients she found that soy oil was in the product, but not listed in the allergen statement while other allergens were. After contacting the company, she contacted FAAN as well. Both gave the same answer. Refined oils do NOT need to be listed in the allergy statement as they do not pose a threat to those with allergies. They are highly processed and the proteins which allergic people react to are no longer in the product. So here is my question....I always read allergy statements/ingredients as my son is severely allergic to many things. I do not think I have ever come across the above situation in regard to his allergies. Does anyone allow their severely allergic "nut" child eat processed oils, though not the actual nut?

Having trouble with my new school district. They will put a monitor on a special bus with my 5 yr old son BUT refuse to train her how to use an epipen. The plan is for her to call 911, or for a 5 yr old to carry his own epi and self inject. My allergist is sending me a letter stating he is too young to self inject, hopefully this will help. In the meantime, I am just wondering how other districts handle transportation to and from school. Thanks

They have several new charms (in addition to the top 8 food allergens) coming in August, including: sesame, strawberry, coconut, and chocolate. Check it out!
